Espresso Book Machine

I just saw the Espresso Book Machine at the MU Bookstore tonight where Mr. Fred Oerly had his own book of stories published. Mr. Oerly is a folklorist extraordinaire from Howard/Cooper counties. The musical Gumbo Bottoms (of which our own Deb Jewett is a star) is based on some of Fred's stories. Anyway, the machine itself is quite large with glassed-in areas where one may view the book being printed. MU has access to 2 million titles through Google Books or Lightening Source. Anyone may bring in her/his own PDF and print a book for 6 cents a page and the bookstore will sell the book on consignment. It opens up all sorts of possiblities for teaching as folks may add their commentaries, forwards, or notes to the text as well.

If copyright is procured by MU, new books that are back-ordered may be printed as well.

  1. That machine is fascinating, isn't it? I've only spied it through the window, not seen it working, so I'm really glad you shared what you know about it.

Do you think editors and publishers are going to be hard-up for work in the future?
